(http://studios NULL.amazon NULL.com/)When I say ‘new movie studio’, I don’t exactly mean literally, a ‘new movie studio’, but really a new online campaign to get budding filmmakers to submit their scripts/screenplays, or movies online for review of their submissions by other users, or alternatively, users can take the submitted idea and ‘revise’ it or ‘edit’ it. Each months best submissions will win monetary prizes, while the best submissions of the year will also win cash.
The goal is to throw open the door to filmmaking and release professional, full-length movies based on the best concepts and ideas, according to Amazon officials.
If a filmmaker or screenwriter’s project is ultimately released by Amazon Studios theatrically, he or she will receive a rights payment of $200,000 US. If that movie then proceeds to exceed $60 million US at the domestic box office, the creator will recive a bonus of $400,000 US.
A panel of industry representatives — including working screenwriters, producers, directors and film school teachers — will analyze the submissions for commercial viability as theatrical films.
“We believe that there are thousands of creative, impassioned people out there who can help each other brainstorm, contribute ideas and collaborate to create better stories, scripts and films,” Amazon Studios director Roy Price said in an introductory video online.
“We hope to discover voices that might not otherwise be heard.”
This is overall a fantastic idea, which at a quick glance through the website, looks like a very good way to attract budding filmmakers wanting to get their ideas out there, rather than sending the scripts/movies to native networks, or broadcasting companies. The only con that I can see so far, is that you cannot submit T.V. scripts, such as half-hour sitcoms or drama, but instead has to be a 70-180 minute movie idea. But it’s not all that bad. As well as being an enthusiastic filmmaker, I love to write films. Today, I began the first draft of the first episode of an episodic program, which when I finish a couple of episodes, I would love to make it into a full 20 minute episodic series.
The whole idea is based of The Office, both US an UK versions, and is set in an Irish all-boys school.
I can’t really say anymore than that, but I’ll keep everyone posted on whats happening with it, and I might even post a sample of it online.
