CameraDSLR.net New Logo/Ident
Posted on 01. Feb, 2011 by admin.
Not much of a blog post, but I just wanted to share the new Ident that I created in AE CS5 for the website.
If you think about it, it’s a basic composite but I really like it. Nothing to complicated! I’ll be throwing together a quick tutorial on how I did it for the fun!

Weekend | 550d ‘Commercial’
Posted on 30. Jan, 2011 by admin.
The title says it’s a commercial…well ‘Weekend’ is more of a commercial than a short film…a commercial for the weekend! It’s the shortest film I’ve made to date and I’m quite proud of it actually, even though I didn’t really shoot much for it.
The original idea was to do a summary/montage of the weekend in 60 seconds with new and original footage, but lack of a car and money meant I couldn’t go anywhere that I could shoot interesting footage of actual people during their weekend rather than boring nature shots.

Shine | 550d Short Film + I talk about Story in Films
Posted on 18. Jan, 2011 by admin.
I have been told a few times that my short films don’t really have a ‘story’ or a ‘mood cue’. But I do know, I mean everyone should know, that a film is not worth watching if there’s no story or emotional cue. It’s easy to shoot something that looks good, but very hard to shoot something that…feels good – if you get me.
I’m saying that it’s hard to create a story even if the images look beautiful.
So I kept this in mind while I shot Shine. When I make mood pieces like this, I rarely know how things are going to end up. I rarely know what location I’m going to shoot in, but instead just turn up at some random place that I think looks nice and set-up there.

Logged | 550d Short Film

It was a Sunday afternoon, I wasn’t doing anything important so I asked my dad to drive me around to scout for some nice locations. The first location is where I shot the first few shots of the radio tower and fences. But the rest of that area was boring, so we drove a bit further out of town.

The 25th | 550d Short Film
Posted on 02. Jan, 2011 by admin.
I travelled 5 hours across the country to stay with my Mum and the family, so I decided to document it as well as I could, and seeing as I had the 50mm it was the perfect opportunity! Basically, I just set it on a tripod for most shots and recorded my mother making the Christmas dinner! Plus, the evening before I got a few shots of the family opening their presents, so I’m glad I shot that as it added a nice touch to it!
I edited it when I got back home on Sony Vegas 10, and again I also coloured it in Vegas too. I gave it a slightly vintage feel to it, hoping to make it a bit more homey, and for the shots of my family, you may have noticed are in B&W. This was a last second decision, which I thought added something special to it.

This is the first tutorial on CameraDSLR.net yet. I explain how I create a timelapse within Sony Vegas, rather than Quicktime Pro, which recently began to fail me.

Flattr | Micropayment for Filmmakers
Posted on 14. Dec, 2010 by admin.
Flattr was founded to help people share money, not only content. Before Flattr, the only reasonable way to donate has been to use Paypal or other systems to send money to people. The threshold for this is quite high. People would just ignore sending donations if it wasn’t for a really important cause. Sending just a small sum has always been a pain in the ass. Who would ever even login to a payment system just to donate €0.01? And €10 was just too high for just one blog entry we liked…

Overground | 550d Short Film
Posted on 13. Dec, 2010 by admin.
Me and a few friends were in town, and I had brought along my 550d with the intention of filming something other than the typical ‘Autumn/Nature’ stuff that you see a bit too much nowadays. We came across a really industrial type hotel car park which upper-levels weren’t in use, and decided to film there. As usual, no planning was involved with this, so I just searched the building for what could look interesting on-screen. {…}
