Overground, another experimental short film shot once again on the Canon 550d using the 18-55 kit lens only!

Me and a few friends were in town, and I had brought along my 550d with the intention of filming something other than the typical ‘Autumn/Nature’ stuff that you see a bit too much nowadays. We came across a really industrial type hotel car park which upper-levels weren’t in use, and decided to film there. As usual, no planning was involved with this, so I just searched the building for what could look interesting on-screen.

Graffiti, CCTV cameras, and other abstract objects were around the building which I decided to shoot, looking for a more shallow DOF feel to it. Also, after discovering Twixtor a few days before and having a sudden interest in slow-motion, I knew that I wanted to shoot at 60fps and cut for slow-mo afterwards, so if you were wondering, I shot the whole film at 720p/60fps.

When I got home I tried to cut it together as well as I could, using Sony Vegas Pro 10 and coloured it within Vegas as well.

  1. Cool Video Nathanael.
What frame rate did you shoot at?

I just tried a Vegas 10 render last night and came out with a horribly low quality & cropped video.
I chose to export to .mp4.

Did you use the raw .mov file to render or did you encode the .mov before importing?

  2. Thanks Armand, it was shot at 60fps.

I render with ‘MainConcept AVC/AAC.mp4′ preset, and customize it to fit my video settings. It should then render properly.

I encoded first, with Mpeg Streamclip.

  3. I love film and have had my t2i for a bit and I love it and I just purchased Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 Production Suite. I love it so far and am just getting started with the color correction/gradeing is there anything you recommend to get good looks with T2i and sony vegas.

  4. i’m no expert, but try shooting with a flat picture style. The picture styles really effect how the image will turn out. As for colour correction, just play around with the footage until you’re satisfied with how it looks. A good plugin is Magic Bullet Looks (http://bit.ly/136kYz (http://bit NULL.ly/136kYz)) which can be used in Vegas.
